Ms. Hollen’s class has been having their own little Derby right in their own classroom in celebration of the upcoming Kentucky Derby. They have read articles together to learn about what it is, how horses are eligible to be in it, and the tedious naming process that goes into naming a Derby horse. They made their own Derby hats and held their very own Derby races until the champion horse was determined.🐎🌹🏆

Today the NHHS Anatomy students started a lab titled ‘Cell Signaling -Taste Lab’. They have been studying the nervous system the last few weeks. This lab focuses on chemoreceptors, a special type of neuron receptor. Students were testing their sense of taste, gustation, through taste buds in their mouth. Each taste bud is a cluster of several cells: chemoreceptor cells in the center of the taste buds that synapse with afferent sensory neurons and support cells that form the outer wall of the taste buds. These taste receptors detect tastants that signal sweet, salty, sour and bitter. To determine how these receptors work, students are trying to different taste inhibitors over the course of two days: Tea made from the herb Gymnema sylvestre and a product called ‘Miracle Berries’. Their task is to determine what effect each inhibitor has on taste perceptions and to come up with a mechanism that explains this effect.
