North Harrison Elementary

Author Doreen Rappaport, a writer of juvenile fiction and non-fiction, visited North Harrison Elem. School for two days this week holding writing workshops for the students.  An author of over 20 published books, she spent time in each classroom describing and discussing and answering questions about the writing process.

Prior to her visit, students had received a chapter to critique from a forthcoming book. "Children are great critics," Ms Rappaport declared. "They know when the words are right for them.  They know when a picture is necessary.  I love to get feed-back from them."

North Harrison Elementary students were amazed to learn that some of her books took up to two years to finish!  They were interested to learn about how she chose and researched her subjects.

"There are over 37 books written about Dr. King," she explained. "I didn't want to write just another factual book of dates. I looked for a new angle."

"Writing is not fun. It's hard work," Ms Rappaport explained. "But you feel wonderful after you've done it!"

Children and Ms Rappaport discussed their favorite books and had a question and answer session during lunch time.

She emphasized the importance of grammar and rewriting. "Finding that absolutely right word for the right spot is so important.  Rewriting is hard work and takes a lot of time."

The question and answer sessions with Ms Rappaport provided insight into an author's collaborations with illustrators, publishers, and even other authors.  Teachers and students were eager to apply their newly acquired knowledge about writing.

She talked to the children about "hooking the reader's interest" with that important theme or idea.  Writers also have to consider a new "angle."

Ms Rappaport autographed books for students and teachers.
